Overview
The role of the Graduate Student Council (GSC) is to serve and represent all graduate and professional students at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The GSC gives students the opportunity to assist with issues concerning academics and student life through internal and University committee appointments.
Internal Committees
Internal committees were created by the GSC in order to fulfill a charge designated by the Council. Internal committees consist of members of the GSC (or non GSC graduate students as appointed).
External Committees
External committees serve as an interface between the Texas A&M University administration and the graduate student body. The Graduate Student Council organizes and manages the process by which graduate students are appointed to these committees.
Committee Requirements
GSC delegates are required to serve on an internal or external committee. Alternates may serve on a committee for or in addition to a delegate, but are not required to do so.
- Attend all committee meetings. Most committees meet three (3) or fewer times a semester and it is important to ensure graduate representation on those few meetings. Committee members must inform the GSC Vice President of University Affairs of any intended absence at least 2 days before the committee meeting with a valid reason. (For internal Committees notify the Internal Committee Chair).
- Report any issues with Internal or External Committees to the GSC Vice President for University Affairs. Committee members must inform the GSC Vice President of University Affairs of any conflict of interest or conflict with committee meeting times as soon as these have been identified in order to make the necessary committee replacements and reassignments. Respond to all e-mails and phone calls regarding committee concerns within 2 days (48 hrs).
- A one-page report (template can be found on the Forms page) must be submitted by the last General meeting of the Fall and Spring semesters for each internal and external committee. This report should highlight the committee's activities during that semester. All members of the committee should collaborate and submit one report. This documentation will allow new GSC Members to follow up on efforts started by former graduate representatives and inform the graduate student body on the University activities. Also, it will allow the Executive Committee to assess the relevance of committees to the GSC and to the wider graduate student body.
Failure to comply with these obligations may result in the student’s removal from the committee.
